A 14-year-old boy and his pal punched a man to the pavement, snatched $10 from his pocket and left him to die between two parked cars in Brooklyn, authorities said yesterday.
Before they fled down Fourth Ave. in Sunset Park, the boys pulled off the unconscious and bleeding victim's shoes and socks - hoping to find more cash, police said.
The victim, identified only as a Mexican man about 30, suffered fatal injuries when he cracked his head on a curb early Tuesday, authorities said.
Yesterday, young Jonathan Torres was charged with second-degree murder in the man's death, and his buddy Luis Alvarato, 17, was charged with manslaughter.
At Alvarato's arraignment last night, Assistant Brooklyn District Attorney Jeffrey Ferguson said the deadly confrontation began at 1:45 a.m. when Torres, known to friends as Little J, exchanged heated words and possibly ethnic slurs with the victim outside a bodega.
Ferguson said Torres walked away but quickly came back with Alvarato and a third teen, who was not charged.
The victim, who wasn't found for 40 minutes after the attack, died at Lutheran Medical Center, authorities said.
"He's just a baby," Torres' aunt Kelly Hussey, 36, said hours before the suspect was ordered held on $100,000 bond before a chorus of crying relatives.
"My brother was trying to protect himself," said Lydia Alvarato, 20. "He's not a bad kid."

June 16, 2005 -- A 4-foot-6 punk barely into his teens helped beat a man senseless and then stole his shoes and $10 from his pocket as he lay dying on a gritty Brooklyn street, authorities said yesterday.
Coldhearted Johnathan Torres, 14, who confessed to the unthinkable crime, came out swinging after the vic tim allegedly insulted Puerto Ricans, they said.
The violence erupted about 2:25 a.m. Tuesday in front of the Frias Grocery store at 4719 Fourth Ave. in Sunset Park.
The tiny Torres was hanging out with two pals, Luis Alvarado, 17, and Jason Elvir, 20, when the victim, a Mexican aged 30 to 40, allegedly hurled the insults, authorities said.
Torres, known as "Little J," called over Alvarado, known as "Bam Bam," and the two began smashing their fists into the victim, who had not yet been identified yesterday.
The man fell down, tried to get up and fell down again, hitting his head on the curb, authorities said.
The three watched heartlessly without calling 911 as the victim lay unconscious, blood flowing from his head, they said.
Then Torres stole the man's shoes and $10 from his pocket, authorities said. All three fled.
The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he died of a blood clot in the brain.
When paramedics arrived, "There was a lot of blood behind his back and you could see blood spilling all over the place," said store employee Luis Santana, 51.
Torres, Alvarado and Elvir were arrested later in the day and Torres and Alvarado admitted they beat the man to death, authorities said.
Torres was charged with second-degree murder because he allegedly killed someone while committing another crime — the theft of the cash and the shoes.
He faces 25 years to life behind bars.
The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office declined to charge Elvir, known as "Big J," because he claimed he did not take part in the beating and there were no witnesses to dispute that.
Torres was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail at his arraignment before Brooklyn Criminal Court Judge Richard Allman. He wore a hooded shirt, basketball shorts and sneakers, and his long hair was in a ponytail.
His lawyer, Lance Lazzaro, insisted Torres never hit anyone. "This person basically got bothered by this guy who was completely drunk on the street and he walked away," he said.
Torres' sister, Annette, said, "My brother's not a killer. He's just a baby."
Alvarado, who was charged with manslaughter, was arraigned last night in front of a different judge.
Unlike his younger friend, Alvarado was ordered held without bail.
Alvarado's lawyer, Frank Paone, said his client had come to the aid of Torres, who was being attacked.
